if you are planning on using the dog for stud i would look at another puppy, yes umbilical hernias can be from trauma, but they can also be hereditary like any other hernia. I would think better safe than sorry and find another puppy. As far as i know, if the dog isnt experiencing any discomfort and the area isnt red, then all is well, otherwise it needs veterinary attention to be corrected. If it were me i would definately pass on this pup.

it wont cause any immediate problems, it can be fixed when the puppy is older (typically its repaired during a spay/neuter)
I dont think its really known if its genetic or not. A dog with a U.H. has a higher chance of producing a pup with a U.H. than one that didnt.
Its not reccommended to breed a dog that had a umbilical hernia.

There is a lot of debate on if an umbilical hernia is or is not hereditary. The American Shih Tzu Club has a good article on it. Go to ShihTzu.org and look in their health and welfare section.

not always hereditary can be caused by trauma during birth, i.e..pulling the umbilical cord by mom or novice breeders.
Can be a problem when the abdominal wall does not close, would NOT breed the dog that has this.

An umbilical hernia is not hereditary. Inguinal hernias are hereditary. Umbilical hernia is usally caused but excessive pulling/chewing on the cord at birth. It is wise to have it repaired because if it is large a loop of intestine can be caught.

It could cause the dog problems if it wasn’t taken care of properly. Yes it is hereditary and it will be passed on if you breed the dog. I wouldn’t breed to the dog, you will be perpetuating the problem.

It is not an immediate danger, but it does need attention. It can cause problems.

I have a female dog that had an umbilical hernia when i got her at 8 weeks old. I purchased her from a Vet. The hernia went away as she grew and has never given her any trouble. She is now over 2 years old and i recently bred her. One of her offspring has an umbilical hernia. The vet said it would either go away as he grows up or he could get it fixed when he gets neutered. That puppy already has a home and they weren’t worried about it. And the Vet wasn’t worried about it either.
